The factory stereo with CD changer sounds OK but not great. Is there any way to upgrade it? An equalizer would be nice. Any suggestions? Is there any way to upgrade the stereo on a '99 BMW 528i without tearing up the dashboard?I believe Scosche makes a kit for that car. You will have to get new amplifiers too and either use crossover caps or a good electronic crossover because that car is equipped with a separate amp which has a channel for every speaker in the car. Count all your speakers, mids, tweeters, etc. BMW's often have 2 or 3 in each front door, 1 or 2 beside the rear seat, and two to four on the rear shelf. If you have 14 speakers, there is a 14-channel amp in the trunk with separate active crossovers. You would either need a lot of amplifiers and a good active crossover or run 2 or 3-way passive crossover networks.
In most cases, a single 5 or 6-channel amp will work. You then need to get 2 or 3-way passive crossovers (as needed) to run the front and rear mids/tweeters.
Your amp will be set to high-pass on the front and rear 4 channels and low-pass to the sub channel. About 80-Hz on the crossover point would be good.
