Is there a speical brand of oil to use on bmw?

Just wondering if i really have to take my car to the dealership to get the oil changed 96 bmw 328isIs there a speical brand of oil to use on bmw?no just see what kind it needs then buy oil in a silver canister. but check the type it needs like wd-_ or 35-40 just check the oil tank or use the manual. it really that simple.
