How many miles can a 1989 BMW 3series go for?

My boyfriend is trying to get me to buy a 1989 BMW 3 series from his father.

It has over 200k miles on it and he wants 1500 for it which includes him repairing the broken transmission.

I am unsure if this is a good thing to do or not.

So I was hoping someone could tell me how long these things last for, and if it is worth buying.
