How do i know if i need to replace a starter or flywheel on bmw?

i have a 1985 bmw 325e that makes a really loud noise when i try to turn it on.. it sounds like metal scraping against each other..could it be that i need a new starter or flywheel? if so how much would it cost for the part and how much do mechanics usually charge to fix that kind of problem? How do i know if i need to replace a starter or flywheel on bmw?The starter can be removed from the vehicle and tested electrically on a bench tester. The flywheel can be inspected visually for broken teeth and such (you can do this with the flywheel still installed, by turning the engine and watching through the starter window, but it's better to remove it).

Parts costs for both will vary depending on year and model. Total cost for repair will depend on how long it takes to complete the job (mechanics charge by the hour, around $75/hr), in addition to parts cost. How do i know if i need to replace a starter or flywheel on bmw?
chances are the starter is bad (the teeth that engage on the flywheel worn down or broken this is called the bendix gear if i recall correctly) however if you let this continue it can damage the teeth on the flywheel so get it checked out/ repaired. How do i know if i need to replace a starter or flywheel on bmw?Starts Good (Kinda) just Loud? To check the Starter needs to be Removed. Look at the Bendix Gear (Gear that engages with the Flywheel), Have the engine Cranked over with a ratchet while you look at all the teeth on the Flywheel, also Check the Flywheel Bolt Tension while you're there.

NOTE; Check The Flywheel No Matter what the Condition of the Starter! How do i know if i need to replace a starter or flywheel on bmw?
most likely just a starter, unless the starter has damaged the flywheel. you'll have to take off the starter to tell anywayHow do i know if i need to replace a starter or flywheel on bmw?If the starter is removed the pinion gear on the starter and the flywheel ring gear can be inspected. You wont need a flywheel just a ring gear put on to the flywheel
