Actually BMW dealers offer a cheaper key: THE POCKET KEY [made from plastic]
HOWEVER this key only opens the doors/trunk and won't start the car.
It is a great backup to have though. Ask about the variations of keys, it sounds like they only offered to sell you a master key. . .
