What is the capacity for ATF pan for BMW E39 528i ?

I want to change the ATF fluid, but I cannot find how many quarts of ATF fluid I need to buy for my BMW 528i 1997. The handbook says it is lifetime ATF, so it does not tell me the capacity of the ATF pan.

The actual capacity of the pan has little to do with it. If you wait long enough, more and more will come out. But the torque converter will always stay half full, because the bottom half can't come out.



But the 2nd post by James is for a new system that is totally empty. That will not be the case with your car. So don't put in as much as that. You can always add more after you have it running and use the dipstick.
