What do people think about the Chris Bangle BMW styling?

I just saw a photo of a new BMW prototype and it is UGLY - like an automotive Sarah Jessica Parker. I know Bangle has left BMW now, but why did BMW choose to go down this route? To me a new Audi or VW is way more classier than a flame-surfaced pig with a BMW badge on it. A lot of people around me agree and it seems like Audi and VW are now thought of as more the 'cool' cars.
