The motor is tired but tranny just got rebulit 50,000 miles ago, so i have to change the motor out. I'd like to get more power if i can. What motors can i fit in my 93 bmw 318 without having to change the tranny? It's not just the transmission, it's the differential as well. Stick with the M42 or M44 4-cylinders; in other words, put back in what you have.
The best way to do a 6-cylinder upgrade in this situation is to find a donor car with a solid drivetrain but wrecked body, so you can pull off all the parts you need. If you have to buy everything separately, the costs add up quickly. What motors can i fit in my 93 bmw 318 without having to change the tranny? The best thing would be to replace with the same type of engine. I have seen people put larger engines in 318's but they usually end up tearing up other parts of the car. The differential mounts cannot handle the added power. The trans can for a while but you will end up doing damage to it. Then you have the added cost of wiring harnesses and control units. It really isn't worth the expense.
