I heard these cars are very complex to work on, and that very few mechanics can work on them.
BQ: How about changing the oil? Can I do that by myself? My friend says its hard to do on a bmw?
How expensive are BMW parts? Some ppl say they are cheap, but others say they are not.Is it true that BMW cars can only be repaired by BMW dealerships? No it's not true. But a lot of people who have a new bmw has absolutely zero reason to bring it anywhere else because of the warranty and free maintenance.
BMW will pay for the maintenance at their facilities, so in terms of a new car, in that respect, yes you must take it to a dealer.
An older car does not require a trip to the dealer, if you feel comfortable that your local mechanic has the proper training and tools, then by all means, use him.
I prefer dealer servicing, it's more expensive, but at least I know that they have the proper tools needed to diagnose and repair. Dealers are REQUIRED to maintain technician certs and tools.
The best cars in the world are built with the best parts, the best parts cost more money. Yes, BMW parts are expensive. Is it true that BMW cars can only be repaired by BMW dealerships?
all a myth. they get this rep because most bmw owners are rich and would rather not do it and take it to dealer as with any dealer, will make you empty your pockets for just about any repair. Bmw also gives a good factory warranty and people can see what it would of cost to fix something that sounds simple and you would think wouldnt cost a lot but it does because it is a dealer.
Dealers are way overpriced no matter what car you buy.
They are very serviceable and parts are slightly more but comparable to Japanese prices.
Chaning the oil is the same for any car. Remove the oil drain plug, let the oil drain, change the filter, close the plug and put new oil in it.
The engines consistenly are on the top 10 ward's best engine of the year awards if that tells you anything. Is it true that BMW cars can only be repaired by BMW dealerships? For oil changes, I have used Mobil 1 fully synthetic from the day I got mine (used) 4.5 years ago. I go by the specs in the manual for the temp outdoors %26amp; get my filters in 3's from Bavauto.com
It's easy to change your own oil and easy to reset the oil light too. On my 95 318, I open the cap on the reset "thingy" (don't recall what it's actually called) %26amp; with a wire, put the wire down in port 7 %26amp; the other end, ground it to shock mount. With key in accessory, count to 7 %26amp; oil bar clears to all green.

If yours is a different model or series, go to BimmerForums %26amp; ask there. Those guys are a collective gold mine for your car!
They can be repaired by anyone. Any mechanic will do, even only car enthusiasts, as long as they're doing the job right that would actually make the car work. BMW parts would cost of course higher than any car like Toyota.
I used to have a BMW and had to look up the parts and cost of repairs. If you're interested in looking it up yourself to completely answer your question, here's the source:Is it true that BMW cars can only be repaired by BMW dealerships?LOL, That's simply untrue. Any trained mechanic can work on BMWs...there is nothing special about them...other than they are utter crap. Don't waste your money on those overengineered POS...
If you already have one, buy a BMW shop manual for your year...it will tell you exactly how to change the oil...it's no harder than on any other car.
One thing I dislike about BMWs, they are pedestrian and break down a lot...but their parts are expensive and repair is expensive...you're buying the name...nothing more.Is it true that BMW cars can only be repaired by BMW dealerships?
No, you do not have to take a BMW to the dealer to be worked on. Any reputable mechanic should be able to work on it.
Yes, you should be able to change your own oil (if you know how). Nothing special about a BMW in that regard.
And Yes, BMW parts are expensive.
Fact is they are NO more complex than other makes depending on models. These days the only thing that makes them hard to work on it the many many expensive tools needed. No longer can a competent tech work on most cars with basic tools with just a few special tools needed. Is it true that BMW cars can only be repaired by BMW dealerships?
Yes they r a bit more difficult 2 work on. %26amp; no u do "NOT" need the dealer 2 do repairs any mechanic shop that works on auto can work on foreign cars. I work @ a normal auto shop %26amp; we work on all makes and models foreign %26amp; domestic vehicles. So 2 answer ur ? That'll be a no.
They can be repaired by other people, but most people get it from the dealership because they know the cars more.
