I own a '84 323i which runs brilliantly and has a bit of guts already but would really like to give it a bit of extra go, looking for some suggestions as to reasonably priced ways to improve the car.How to increase the power of a bmw 323i?I have said this many times, tires. Those expensive black rubbers are your best investments in a car. It is the only part of the car that comes into contact with the road and propels you forward. Forget the all-season tires, go for performance tires if you want performance. Get summer tires during summer and winter tires during winter. I cannot stress the importance of tires. Change them when the wear out, and rotate the regularly for even wear, and you'll be surprised how much better your car rides and drives.



Also, cut down on weight. It will improve your fuel economy and improve handling without stressing the engine. If you cut down on weight, acceleration will improve F=MA. Force is the force from the engine...so if you dont change that, and reduced weight, A(acceleration) will improve. Unless you can alter around the physics.



Another important factor is aerodynamics. It may not play a huge role during city driving, but when you go upwards of 100km/h (62 MPH), the air gets pretty thick. But as a daily driver, i wouldnt worry about that.



As for power, there are many many many things you can do. If the engine is old, i wouldnt recommend cleaning all the gunk out....sometimes in older engines, the gunk actually holds the pieces together. If the engine is really old, and there hasnt been much in terms of maintenance, i would say just do an engine swap.

Some common ways to get more ponies are to force induce it (turbo or supercharger), chip..etc. Just about any part of the engine can be replaced for more power.
